Week 7: Language, Power, and Colonialism

Source: WikimediaCommons Today, I watched interesting short films about English and its use in China, called The expansion of English in China and Global English use in European Union. The movies both depicted the use of the English language in two different scenarios in today's world.  The key takeaways I got from the two videos: The expansion of English in China - English is considered to be the language of opportunity (to get rich you have to speak English attitude by parents). In order to dominate and not miss any opportunities, knowing English is considered to be an essential element.  - Massive expansion of English in China has been happening in recent years.  - English learning may come at an expense of knowing Chinese, as words are often substituted, such as the word "DVD" and other simplified terms.  Global English use in European Union  - English is becoming more used and valued, but not officially. Week 4 Beyond Good and Evil

I found the film, beyond Good and Evil very interesting.   Main Takeaways: - People take complex ideas and make them simple to understand and might have the "you're either with me, or against me logic" I explained it more in my YouTube video: VLOG week 3 Let me know your thoughts!

Week 5: Surveillance State Or Way of the Future

This week, I watched the film, Surveillance State or Way of the Future, which was a documentary providing insight into the current trends of the Chinese government's involvement in the everyday life surveillance of its citizens.  I think it was a very interesting analysis of the current situation, its relevance was highlighted in its analysis of the behavior during the Covid-19 pandemic.  I don't really like talking in front of the camera, but I tried my best :)  Here is the link to my vlog: https://youtu.be/5HCJztTi8XM Source:  DW Documentary. Week 4: Silence is...

Image
This week, I examined the topic of silence, more specifically, it being equally as (if not more) powerful than speking out.  The main points gathered from the reading and the film Whitewashed: Unmasking the World of Whiteness I got are depicted in this infographic below. Infographic 1: 1. Beginning Desire to separate where the people came from, altering last names to get jobs (assimilation to dominant white culture) Thus conforming to become white (giving up identities for sake of whiteness) 2. Privilege from expectation Moving through the world fearlessly, not having to think about race, (privilege and access) - Embedded everywhere: expectations match reality, white - acceptable person 3. Consequence Racism is changing and mutating White privilege demonstrated in daily life SILENCE IS DOMINANT I created these two infographics in order to showcase the main points I gathered from the reading and videos:
